Rousseau de Poulet Chaud

Supermarkets near railway stations in Swiss cities serve whole hot roast chicken all day long.

For years the best hot chicken was found in the back of the Manor supermarket on the Rue Rousseau.

From Rue Rousseau it is a short walk down to the water where Lac Léman joins the Rhöne river in the port of Geneva, its iconic fountain rising high into the blue window of the Alps.

Turn left onto Quai des Bergues, cross the road to the Pont des Bergues, and left again.

There on Rousseau’s island the great philosopher will contemplate the world while watching you eat your lunch.

All you need is the chicken and a few wipes, unless of course you prefer to clean your hands on the grass.

Rousseau, who loved to picnic with François-Louise de la Tour, Baronne de Warens, at Chambéry, would not disapprove.
